About the Vineyard
Chateau Montelena is a family-owned winery in Napa Valley, California, with a celebrated history. Alfred Tubbs, a San Francisco entrepreneur and California State Senator, founded the winery in 1882 after falling in love with the French wine industry. Originally intended as a barrel-aging facility, the winery was one of the largest in the country before Prohibition. The first vintage was produced in 1886.
In 1972, Jim Barrett, a young real estate attorney, purchased the estate and began its modern era. The Barrett family replanted the vineyard, invested in modern equipment, and improved farming and winemaking processes. In 1976, Chateau Montelena's 1973 Chardonnay won the "Judgment of Paris", a blind tasting competition where American winemakers were judged against French and other wines. The Chardonnay received a score of 132 points, putting California at the forefront of the wine world and American wine and spirits on the map.
Today, Chateau Montelena is known for its handcrafted Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, and is located in a stone castle carved into a hillside that overlooks a Chinese garden, lake, and vineyards. The winery is also a leader in sustainability, using LED filament bulbs that last for years instead of months, installing electric vehicle (EV) chargers, and focusing on water efficiency. Bo Barrett, Jim Barrett's son, is the current owner and winemaker of Chateau Montelena.
